American Express is the financial services organization in the United States that issues traveler's checks, also known as traveler's cheques. These can be purchased at a variety of locations, including your local bank. You must purchase traveler's checks with cash, and you must specify the desired currency denomination--for example, euros or pounds sterling. If your traveler's check is stolen, American Express will replace it within 24 hours.

Use

Traveler's checks are accepted in most establishments because they work like cash. You must fill out your name and address on the check, which is verified with photo identification. If you spend less money than the value of the check, you will receive cash from the cashier as change.
