    • The New York State Legislature designated Catskill Park--the official name of the Catskills region--as protected land in 1904. At the time, the area included 92,708 acres. The parkland has expanded since then to include more State Forest Preserve land and now consists of 287,514 acres.

    • The Catskill Mountains region includes more than 400,000 acres of rich, productive fruit and vegetable farms. More than 2,000 farmers regularly sell their harvests to one of the country's original and largest farmers' markets in New York City.

    Fun Fact

    • The Christmas tree market in the United States began when a Catskills farmer sold the first Christmas tree in 1851. Mark Carr transported two sleds loaded with evergreens from the Catskill Mountains to New York City and quickly sold them to the locals.
