What Does the Claddagh Ring Signify?

Claddagh rings are symbolic rings worn by both men and women for fashion and as wedding rings. They are one of the best-known Irish symbols, but their popularity has spread around the world.

The Legend

The Royal Claddagh website reports that the claddagh ring has its roots in the 17th century, when a young man was kidnapped and sold as a slave to a goldsmith. Over years he learned and practiced the art until he was freed and returned to the town of Claddagh to reunite with the woman he loved. He made her the first claddagh ring, and they were married.

The Three Parts

The claddagh is composed of two hands holding a heart which is topped with a crown. The hands symbolize friendship and the bond which grows between two people. The heart represents unending love between two partners. Finally, the crown signifies loyalty and fidelity to one another.

How it's Worn

The way the claddagh is worn also has significance. Worn on the right hand with the heart facing out shows that the wearer is not taken. Worn on the right hand with the heart facing inward means that the wearing is in love or with somebody. As a wedding ring, it is worn on the left hand with the heart facing inwards.
