Why Won't the Garage Doors Open After a Power Failure?


Electric garage door openers allow homeowners to open and close their garage doors from the safety and security of their home or car with the push of a button. However, in the event of a power failure, the garage door must be opened manually.

Components of an Electric Garage Door Opener

  • An electric garage door opener contains an electric motor that powers the unit to raise and lower the garage door upon command. The motor is attached to the garage ceiling. A chain or belt extends from the motor and attaches to the garage door. A wall-mount or wireless transmitter sends a signal to the electric motor causing it to raise and lower the garage door.

  • The garage door opener is electrically powered. In the event of a power failure, the unit will be unable to operate.

Opening a Garage Door During a Power Failure

  • Electric garage door openers have a a release lever which disengages the motor so you can manually open the door during a power outage. A rope is usually attached to the release lever for easy access.
