Press releases should give a detailed account of your product or service and why it's relevant to potential customers

Press releases are often used by entrepreneurs, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to promote their products and services to the general public. Press releases are targeted at print and broadcast media outlets that may be interested in doing an piece on the item, business or event mentioned in the release. Some people also send products in addition to the releases. For example, a new gourmet coffee store may send a few packets of their most popular ground coffees with a press release kit.

  1. Information Must Be Relevant

    • According to the website Press Release Writing, it's important that the information in your press release is relevant and not generic. For example, if you're writing a press release that discusses the growing need for fathers to be involved in the lives of children, this wouldn't be too newsworthy. If your press release announces a new counseling center for single fathers in your neighborhood, however, this would get potential readers', and editors', attention.

    Focus on Facts

    • Focus on the most important facts that you want readers to know. If you're opening a party planning business for primarily upper-income business executives, you should write about what kinds of services you'll offer, the prices and how your business will benefit your community. Be certain to also include all of your relevant contact information.

    Consider Your Target Audience

    • According to Entrepreneur, it's also important to think about who your target audience will be before writing the press releases. If your target audience is college graduates and you're starting an employment agency in your city, you want to write the releases in a way that will get college graduates excited about going to the agency. In the release, you can mention some major companies that are networking with you.
