How Bic Pens Are Made

The Bic Corporation is a leading manufacturer of disposable ballpoint pens in the United States. Ballpoint pens account for around half of the company's produced goods, around half of Bic's earnings.

Mass Production

The Bic World website reports disposable ballpoint pens are produced using machines to mass produce pens. Machine operators regulate the speed and quality of the disposable pens produced at Bic's factories in North and South America.

Point

The ball of each Bic pen is made of tungsten, hardened under high temperatures and molded into a sphere between two flat surfaces, according to Bic World. The ball is then installed into a point and point support, manufactured using injection molding techniques.

Assembly

The various parts of Bic pens are molded at each Bic factory using molds created by the company's technology department. Bic World reports when the various parts of the pen have been molded they are assembled using high-speed machines.
