Chrysler's HEMI engine became popular in the 1950s through the 1970, but what some people do not know is that the first HEMI engine produced by Chrysler was in an airplane--the P-47 Thunderbolt. The term HEMI refers less to the engine, and more to the cylinder heads, which have hemispherical (HEMI) combustion chambers. In the 2006 model year, seven Chrysler vehicles use the 5.7 HEMI: the Dodge Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500; Dodge Durango, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300 C.

Configuration

The 2006 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine has 16 valves in an overhead-valve (OHV) configuration. It runs on regular gasoline, which is delivered via sequential electronic fuel injection (SEFI).

Internals

The engine has a bore (cylinder width) of 3.92 inches, a stroke (distance piston travels inside the cylinder) of 3.58 inches and a 9.6-to-1 compression ratio. The 2006 HEMI has a displacement of 5,654 cubic centimeters.

Output

The output of the 5.7-liter HEMI is measured by its torque and horsepower rating. This engine has multiple output ratings, as Chrysler uses it in several vehicles. In the 2006 Ram 1500 and 2500, the HEMI produces 345 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 375 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,200 rpm. In the Ram 3500, the engine produces 330 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 375 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,200 rpm. In the Dodge Durango the 5.7-liter produces 335 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 370 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,200 rpm. In the passenger cars--Dodge Charger R/T, Dodge Magnum R/T and Chrysler 300 C--the engine produces 340 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 390 ft.-lb. of torque at 4,000 rpm.
