How Much Does a Nanny Make an Hour?
Whether you're considering hiring a nanny or thinking about becoming one, salary should be a consideration. Because a nanny's duties are varied and the cost of living differs, it may be hard to pinpoint a single hourly wage that covers every situation.
-
Location
-
Where you are influences a nanny's wage. Wages are different for au pairs living with a family in a foreign country than for a nanny within the United States. Even within the U.S., each state and city varies in terms of economics and average wages, so a nanny's wages also vary.
Live-in or Live-out?
-
A live-in nanny receives room and board in addition to her wage. A live-in nanny often receives a lower wage because the family is also providing room and board.
-
Experience
-
A nanny with infant experience can earn more. If a nanny is new to full-time child care s/he wouldn't garner as high a wage as someone who has been in the field for awhile. This also applies if the child needing care is an infant and the potential nanny's experience is with elementary age children.
Financial Considerations
-
Legally, parents should have taxes taken out for their nanny. Though it's common to pay "under the table" it's better for a parent to work with their accountant to take out taxes and provide a legitimate job for their nanny. A nanny should receive at least the minimum wage for his/her state.
Additional Responsibilities
-
Extra responsibilities, like sweeping, can result in a pay increase. When other duties, such as laundry and housekeeping, are in the job description a nanny should receive a little bit more. If the nanny is transporting the children in a personal car, some families offer compensation for gas and wear and tear.
The Bottom Line
-
The average hourly income for a nanny ranges from $9.00 to $18.00. According to a 2009 survey by the International Nanny Association, a nanny's average hourly income ranges from $9.05 in Kentucky to $17.89 in Connecticut.
