Code of Conduct for Patients in a Doctor's Office

Give your doctor the same courtesy you expect for yourself.

It turns out that mom was right. Good manners are important for the rest of your life. Don't leave them at the door when you enter the doctor's office. Courteous behavior can have an impact on your health care.

Arrive Early

Plan ahead for unexpected obstacles that could delay your arrival time.

Plan ahead for traffic jams, construction zones and parking difficulties. Allow extra time to get to your appointment. Take along reading material, in case you arrive early, or have to wait. It is only realistic to assume a wait time.

Write it Down

Write questions ahead of time to make better use of your appointment time.

Be prepared with a short list of questions. Keep your visit focused. The doctor will be able to answer your questions more effectively when you communicate concisely. Have a paper and pen ready to jot down any notes to help you remember his advice.

Sneeze or Cough Discreetly

Use a tissue or clean handkerchief to touch doorknobs.

Cough or sneeze into your arm to keep your hands germ-free. Carry hand sanitizer with you, to use after coughing or sneezing. Use a tissue to touch doorknobs and other common use items.

Your Child's Visit

Do not ask the doctor to examine your other children without an appointment.

Do not ask the doctor to examine your other child, since she is already there. The doctor needs to focus on the child who has the appointment. If your other child is sick, make an appointment for her, as well.
