Music Copyright Problems
Think twice before you download that popular song. Copyright law dictates what consumers can do with recorded music and sheet music, including how they get it and what they do with it afterward.
-
Copying
-
Personal copying of music remains legal and does not violate copyright law. Transferring music from CD to your computer or MP3 player and creating backup CDs does not pose a problem.
Sharing
-
Sharing music or receiving shared music, referred to as piracy, violates copyright law when the sharing affects the commercial value of the music. This includes free music downloads. Charging for music increases the damages awarded to the offended party.
-
Video Use
-
The use of copyrighted music in videos, especially those posted on websites like YouTube, presents another problem. Some video sharing websites even flag videos with copyrighted music, particularly if mainstream music appears. These websites do this to protect themselves against claims of copyright infringement.
Sheet Music
-
Public domain sheet music can be used for recording, remixing, copying, distributing and performing. If using non-public domain sheet music, however, you run the risk of paying royalties and violating licenses and rights.
