What Is the Estimated Salary for a Homicide Detective?
Homicide detectives can make salaries of $40,000 or considerably higher per year. However, these individuals must pay their dues as patrol officers for six months to three years before becoming eligible for promotions that can eventually lead to becoming a detective.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), detectives and criminal investigators earned average wages of $31.66 per hour, or $65,860 per year, as of May 2009. Online career resource PayScale reports that police detectives can earn salaries between $45,155 and $82,166 per year based on a survey of 427 detectives from September 2010.

Local government departments, which include civic police forces, were the largest employers of detectives and criminal investigators, reports the BLS, and paid average wages of $29.44 per hour, or $61,230 per year, in May 2009. PayScale's survey found that state and local governments paid annual salaries of between $48,322 and $82,936 to police detectives.

According to PayScale, police detectives with one to four years on the job made $37,999 to $52,431, while those with five to nine years of experience earned salaries between $39,608 and $65,405 per year. Salaries rose to between $49,566 and $81,355 for police detectives with 10 to 19 years of experience, while those with detective careers spanning 20 years or more made $58,045 to $97,173 annually.
