Thin Client Appliance Link Protocol
A thin client is a terminal which displays behavior usually associated with a computer running an application. The processing is actually performed by a server. The Appliance Link Protocol (ALP) is a Sun Microsystems/Oracle proprietary method for the Sun Ray system.

The protocols form a part of "Sun Ray Software" (SRS) which is the operating software associated with the Sun Ray system. This is a closed source system which means the standard is not publicly available. However, Oracle is producing an open source version written in the Java language. This project is called "SoftRay."

ALP has three components. These are Appliance Link Session Protocol (ALSP); Appliance Link Render Protocol (ALRP) for graphics and sound; and Appliance Link Device Protocol (ALDP).

Method

A thin client has no resident applications, but it does have a full operating system. The Sun Ray system, for which ALP is used, is known as an "Ultra-thin Client." This means that the client only runs sufficient software to connect to the network and contact the server. All other operating functions are held on the server.
