Proper driving position gives drivers a clear view of the road.

Driving a car begins with proper posture. Correct seat position plays a significant role in the comfort and safety of drivers and passengers. Taking time to adjust your seat can mean the difference between averting an accident or not.

  1. Seat Position

    • Position the seat so you can reach the floor pedals and steering wheel, while leaving a slight bend in your arms and legs. Adjust the headrest so it's directly behind your head. Allow space between your legs and the steering wheel so it does not interfere with your leg movements.

    Posture

    • Sit back against the seat. Keep knees parallel or slightly higher than your hips. Place your hands on either side of the steering wheel. Relax your shoulders. Opinions differ over whether the best steering position is to put your hands at 10 and 2 o'clock or 9 and 3 o'clock (meaning those positions on a clock with a face). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains it doesn't have enough data to recommend one position over the other.

    Safety

    • Proper posture helps a driver see road challenges and respond to them more quickly. Likewise, you should always wear a seat belt, properly adjust mirrors and keep small children in car seats. Good driving practices can lessen the chance of serious injury when accidents do occur.
