Goal setting enhances on-the-job skills.

Goal setting is a way to become clear on what you intend to accomplish over a specific time period. Setting goals can keep an employee motivated. A family daycare employee should focus on goals that are specific, measurable and attainable.

  1. Be Specific

    • Goals should be as specific as possible. For example, "Give two children positive reinforcement each day," as opposed to "Be nice to the children." Setting clear expectations ensures goals are reached.

    Create Measurable Goals

    • If goals are too vague or broad it can be hard to measure success. To create a goal that is measurable, lay out the steps to attain each goal. For example, "Get new craft idea by Monday afternoon, obtain supplies by Tuesday afternoon, do craft with kids every Wednesday morning."

    Create Attainable Goals

    • If a goal is too ambitious or unreachable it will not be accomplished. Try setting goals that are challenging, yet attainable. "Lead circle time five days a week" is a good example, where "Lead all morning and afternoon activities five days a week" might be too much.
