Can I Go Into the Military With Student Loans?

Debt and student loans can prove to be a problem for some college students after they are finished with their education. As far as the United States military is concerned, applicants with students loans are no different than applicants without them.

  1. Eligibility

    • According to Department of Defense Directive 1304.26, which governs enlistment standards for all branches of the military, student loan debt will not disqualify you from service. Instead, applicants must be seen as responsible and of good moral character. While debt may be irresponsible in some cases, the military actively encourages education and does not see student loans as falling under this category.

    Repayment

    • In some cases, the military will repay an applicant's student loans if they rejoin the military. For example, as of 2010, the Army may be able to offer up to $65,000 to repay student loans for highly-qualified enlisted applicants. The Navy and the Air Force also have programs to help applicants pay off all, or a portion of, their debt.

    Warning

    • Although the services currently offer help to those with student loans in some circumstances, speak with a recruiter regarding specifics and individual situations. The military has a wealth of regulations, rules and conditions, so be sure to detail specific loans and situations prior to enlistment.
