Can Persons with Long Webbing Have Their Tongues Pierced?

Tongue piercings usually involve a straight barbell placed in the middle of the tongue, which can be later changed to a ring, if desired. Tongue piercings can be performed on a person who has a long frenulum or webbing underneath the tongue. However, this procedure involves serious health and dental risks, according to Anne Greenblatt, a professional piercer.

Warning

People who have a long frenulum should not get tongue piercings since the piercing must be made in front or to the side of the frenulum. Piercing the frenulum causes scarring. A tongue piercing too far forwards may cause gum irritation, gum damage or tooth damage, according to Greenblatt.

Considerations

If you have a long frenulum and wish to get a tongue piercing, you may be able to have your frenulum clipped. Talk to your dentist or oral surgeon about clipping options.

Safety

Body piercings, including tongue piercings, can cause infections, allergic reactions, bleeding and scarring. Tongue piercings can damage teeth and gums. The American Dental Association is opposed to tongue piercing because of its dental and health risks.
