The Visual Basic environment also includes a debugger, or tool designed to test and evaluate programs for errors. The Visual Basic environment also includes utilities called build automation tools, which are used to automate, or automatically execute, functions that software programmers must typically perform, such as document creation.

The Microsoft Visual Basic series was succeeded by Visual Basic .NET, or VB.NET. The Visual Basic environment prior to VB.NET is no longer supported by Microsoft.
