If You E-File Do You Still Have to Mail in Your W-2 Forms?

According to information posted on the IRS website, if you e-file your tax return you do not have to mail in your W-2 form(s). In fact, if you e-file, the only thing you may be required to mail in is your payment if you have a balance due.

  1. Features

    • When you e-file, you are required to enter all of the information supplied on your W-2 form(s) on the e-file form. This eliminates the need to mail in a hard copy of your W-2 form(s).

    Other Forms

    • The same policy applies to other income forms such as the W2-G, 1099-MISC, and the 1098 form. As you go through the e-file process, you will be prompted to transcribe the information supplied on these different income forms to your e-file form.

What You Do Have to Mail In

    • If you have a balance due, the IRS offers several payment options. You could pay by direct debit (just fill in your banking account information on the e-file worksheet). You could use your debit or credit card to pay by phone. If neither of these payment options suits you, you will have to mail your payment to the IRS.
