Siberian ginseng is used to treat a variety of symptoms from the common cold to general vitality.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) contains the ingredient eleutheroside, which is thought to promote immunity. It is only distantly related to American and Asian ginseng. It has traditionally been used to boost immunity, prevent colds and flu, and increase energy.

    • Siberian ginseng is traditionally used to treat the flu and colds. It has also been used to treat viral herpes infections, to boost mental alertness and physical stamina, and to enhance social functioning and mental health.

    • Siberian ginseng is native shrub in Siberia and the Far East. It grows as tall as 10 feet, and is a thorny plant with long branches. It flowers in yellow- or violet-colored clusters, and produces dark, round berries. The root, which is the part of the plant used for medical purposes, is brown and woody.

    Forms of Siberian Ginseng Supplement

    • As a supplement, Siberian ginseng is available dried, for use in teas, as a tincture and as an extract in pill or liquid form. It is available for purchase online or in well-stocked natural health stores.

    • Siberian ginseng is considered safe when used as directed by a healthcare professional, herbalist or nutritionist. However, it can cause some mild side effects and should not be taken by people with high blood pressure, sleep disorders, or by pregnant or nursing women.
