Dump Truck Maintenance

Properly maintained dump trucks are safer.

The government's Occupational Safety and Health agency reports that almost all dump truck crushing accidents result in death. Regular maintenance increases safety levels and reduce risks for workers.

  1. Daily Maintenance

    • Before running a dump truck, the operator should perform basic maintenance, such as checking the tire pressure and assessing fuel levels. Emergency equipment--such as a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and reflectors--should also be examined and restocked.

    Regular Tasks

    • Companies should perform all other maintenance tasks on a regular basis, following the suggested schedule of the organization. Items such as oil, belts, batteries, brakes, lights, hydraulics and meters need regular attention.

    Considerations

    • Workers should never attempt maintenance under a raised dump truck bed without putting stable props under the dump truck bed. Dual protections, such as a crane coupled with supports, are highly recommended.
