Diet for People With High Uric Acid
Gout is a type of painful arthritis characterized by sudden swelling, redness, pain and inflammation in one or more joints. A diet clean of purines, which cause uric acid buildup, can help lessen gout's effects and occurrences.

Purines
-
Uric acid in your blood is caused by purines that are produced in the body and come from natural foods. If your body cannot get rid of the acid as fast as it builds up, the excess uric acid may cause the formation of crystals in the joints, causing gout. Too many foods containing high amounts of purines may lead to the condition.
Foods to Avoid
-
Foods that contain high amounts of purines include hearts, pork, liver, kidneys, sweetbreads, broth and yeast. A lot of seafood also contains high amounts of purines, including sardines, mussels, herrings and anchovies.

Foods to Consume
-
Fruits and vegetables are low in uric acid and can be plentifully consumed. Rice is also low in purines. Among the most beneficial foods are dark berries, soybeans, tofu, nuts, flax and olive oil.
Beverages
-
Beer, lager and ale should be avoided due to the yeast which naturally contains uric acid. Mixes, cider or cocktails are suitable alternatives. People with gout should also drink about three liters of water a day to help flush uric acid out of their body and prevent buildup.
