Your Prelude's fuel filter keeps your engine clean

Your Prelude's fuel filter works to remove debris from the fuel in the car's gas tank before the gas reaches the engine. Checking and changing your fuel filter should be a regular part of your car's maintenance schedule.

  1. Function

    • The fuel filter is located along the gas line that runs from your fuel tank to your fuel injection system. Using layers of material, it filters out debris and contaminants from the fuel or your tank. This allows the gas to flow smoothly, prevents clogging along the fuel injection system and keeps your engine performing its best.

    Location

    • The fuel filter for most Preludes is found at the rear of the engine close to the passenger side firewall (the barrier between the engine part of the car and the passenger part of the car). It resembles a small canister that may be black or silver. The fuel filter is difficult to find looking from the top of the engine and is more easily located from the underside. If you still have trouble finding it, follow your fuel line from the tank toward the engine to locate the filter.

    Considerations

    • You should replace your fuel filter about every 24,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. Signs your fuel filter needs to be replaced include squealing engine noises and poor performance. Unless you are familiar with checking and changing fuel filters you should have a mechanic perform these tasks.
