'96 Audi A4 Quattro Specifications
The Audi A4 Quattro is an all-wheel-drive (AWD) German compact luxury sedan. The 1996 model marks the first year of production for Audi's successful A4 line. Replacing the Audi 90, the A4 Quattro wooed buyers with its refined interior and exterior, its decent power and its prescient AWD system.

A lone V6 engine propelled the A4 model lineup for 1996, a single-overhead-cam 12-valve unit displacing 2.8 liters. Power output was 172 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 184 lb-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm. EPA estimated fuel economy was 18 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.

A key 1996 Audi A4 selling point was its Quattro all-wheel-drive system, the fourth-generation Audi AWD system. Quattro works by continuously routing power as needed among all four wheels to maintain optimum handling and traction. Transmission options were a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic. The 1996 A4 had an independent multi-link front suspension and a fixed axle torsion beam setup in the rear.

The 1996 A4 Quattro measured 178 inches long, 68.1 inches wide and 55.8 inches tall. Wheelbase was 102.6 inches; curb weight was 3,228 lbs. Inside is seating for five with a sumptuous interior that propelled the A4 into the luxury market. Motor Trend magazine noted the interior "provides posh accommodations with supple textures and precise switchgear movement."
