Vinegar and salt are inexpensive items, saving you the cost of more expensive commercial products. The combination of vinegar and salt effectively removes the tarnish from brass objects without scratching or damaging them.
Method

Mix equal parts full-strength, white distilled vinegar and salt in a small bowl. Combine the vinegar and salt until it forms a paste. Use a soft paper towel to rub the paste onto the brass item. Continue rubbing the paste in until the tarnish is gone. Rinse the item with cool water, and polish it with a soft towel until it is completely dry.

In addition to cleaning brass, this process is safe and effective for cleaning bronze and copper doorknobs and other items.
