Kentucky has very specific laws regarding boating safety. Following these laws makes Kentucky's lakes and rivers safer for boaters and swimmers alike.

  1. Flotation Devices

    • For each person aboard a boat, there must be at least one Coast Guard-approved wearable flotation device in good condition. There must also be a throwable flotation device for each boat that is easily accessible.

    Alcohol is Prohibited

    • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited in all Kentucky public areas. Kentucky waterways are considered public areas.

    Lighting

    • From sunset to sunrise a boat must have red and green sidelights. The red light will be on the port (left) side and the green on the starboard (right) side.

    Speed

    • You must not operate your boat above idle speed within 100 feet of a dock. Also, if you are in a heavily congested area, you should not operate above idle speed.

    Around Swimmers

    • You may not operate your boat in a designated swim area or operate your boat to circle around a swimmer.
