Minnesota DNR Boating Regulations
Boating safety laws in Minnesota are meant to protect boaters and people in the surrounding water. Each person operating a boat has the responsibility of knowing the laws that govern boating in the state.

Licensing

You must license your boat at any deputy registrar of motor vehicles in Minnesota, the same place that you register your car. To register, you must have the hull identification number and your sales tax receipt.
Equipment

Anyone under the age of 10 must wear a life jacket while the boat is being operated. There must be a Coast Guard approved flotation device for every person on board the boat. If the boat is 16 feet or longer, there must also be a throwable flotation device on board. Navigation lights must be in operation from sunset to sunrise.

General Operation

Do not operate a watercraft in a careless or reckless manner, in a designated swimming area or while under the influence of alcohol. Do not obstruct sea planes from take off or landing.
