Windows XP can automatically install a flash drive as a "USB Mass Storage Device."

A USB Flash Drive is an easy way to backup and transport files on a Windows system. The installation of USB storage drivers in Windows XP is largely automatic, requiring no technical knowledge on the part of the end user.

  1. Windows Updates

    • Although optional, it is always a good practice to make sure your Windows XP system is fully updated before installing new hardware. Check for a yellow shield icon in your system tray (lower-right corner of the desktop). If it exists, click on it and follow the on-screen instructions to install critical Windows updates.

    Insert the Flash Drive

    • Firmly insert your flash drive into an open USB port on the PC. (If you have already used flash drives or similar USB mass storage devices on this PC, physically inserting the drive may be the only step necessary!) If you have trouble getting the flash drive into the USB port, try turning the flash drive upside down.

    Automatic Driver Installation

    • If this is the first time you've used a flash drive with your Windows XP Home system, you may receive a pop-up window about finding "Drivers" for the "New Hardware." Select the "Allow Windows to find the best drivers" option. The system may take a minute or two to load the drivers. When automatic driver installation has completed, you will see a yellow bubble pop up near your system tray. It should say, "USB Mass Storage Device: Your new hardware is installed and ready to use."
