What Kind of Software Do I Need for Check Printing?

You can use your word processing software or the check printing capabilities of your accounting program to fill in preprinted checks. If you plan to also print the MICR data yourself, you will need software to manage the placement and spacing of special MICR fonts and a laser printer that will accept special magnetic toner.

  1. Filling in Preprinted Checks

    • Your accounting or bookkeeping software package should have templates for filling in common sizes of preprinted checks. You can also create a template for your word processor, spreadsheet or database to fill in preprinted checks.

Printing MICR Data and Complete Checks

    • In addition to text information, you will have to add MICR, or magnetic ink character recognition, to the bottom left if you are printing complete checks. MICR is a combination of a special font and magnetic ink. A MICR font is 14 characters: zero through nine with four special purpose characters. You can use a word processing program to lay out the checks, but companies that license the fonts may have easier-to-use templates that you can trust to place the information correctly and to exacting specifications. You will need a laser printer that will take a cartridge with special magnetic toner to print the checks.

    Adding Signatures to Checks

    • You may want to print signatures on your checks to save time. You will need a high-resolution scanner and software to turn scanned signatures into graphic files that you can import into your check printing or imprinting template.
