Home Remedy for Fixing a Scratched CD

Home Remedy for Fixing a Scratched CD thumbnail
Always move from the center to the edge when wiping a CD.

When a CD becomes scratched accidentally, there are a number of options available to fix it at home and easily. The same techniques can be used to repair scratches on the surface of DVDs. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Considerations

    • When cleaning or smoothing out any scratch on a CD, always move from the center to the edge and repeat all the way around the disk. Never go in circles around the length of the disk, as this can result in unevenness that prevents the CD from playing.

    Solution

    • To fix large scratches, use a fine-grit sandpaper to bring the entire surface of the CD even with the scratch. Using a soft cloth, add car polish and buff the surface of the disk until it's shiny again, similar to removing a scratch on a car.

    Effects

    • Acrylic liquid cleaner also can be used to repair scratches in a similar manner as car polish, but can generate heat if rubbed too vigorously. Make several passes around one spot instead of focusing on one area, which can create heat that damages the CD.
