Educational anthropology focuses on the function of educational systems in society.

The basis of anthropology is the study of human beings from the past to the present. Traditionally in the United States the four main areas of anthropology that are studied are sociocultural, biological/physical, linguistic and archeology. Educational anthropology falls under the field of sociocultural anthropology.

  1. Sociocultural Anthropology

    • Sociocultural anthropology is the study of human beings and their culture and societies. Scientists in this field "examine patterns and processes of cultural change," according to the American Anthropological Association. Practical as well as philosophical issues of daily life are focused upon in relation to how particular cultures and societies deal with these issues.

    Educational Anthropology

    • Educational anthropology is a sub-field of sociocultural anthropology. Its focus is on educational systems and their function and adaptation within society and culture. The Council on Anthropology and Education works to "to advance anti-oppressive, socially equitable, and racially just solutions to educational problems."

    George and Louise Spindler

    • George and Louise Spindler are recognized as being influential figures in founding, nurturing, and promoting the sub-field of anthropology and education, according to Margaret Eisenhart in "Anthropology and Education Quarterly." Their work in the field spans more than 50 years and remains the foundation of educational anthropology today.
