Ethernet to Ethernet Crossover Adapter

The Ethernet adapter connects between the Ethernet cable and port.

Network administrators can use Ethernet crossover adapters, such as the SuperLooper, to create a multi-directional connection between a straight through Ethernet cable and an Ethernet port.

  1. Usage

    • The Ethernet crossover connects a regular, or straight through, Ethernet cable and a computer or network device to allow the cables to transmit data in either direction, which is not typical of a basic straight through cable. This configuration may replace the usage of a single crossover Ethernet cable in small networks, such as when a user configures two Windows computers while using the Network Wizard.

    Benefits

    • The crossover adapter provides the functionality of switching the data transmission direction. In many local area networks (LANs), a more expensive device such as a network switch or router is capable of this. The crossover adapter is also smaller than a router. Furthermore, a person who is in possession of this adapter does not need to purchase and store an Ethernet crossover cable in addition to the regular cables.

    Considerations

    • Although there are some benefits to using a crossover adapter, these adapters are fairly uncommon as of September 2010. Crossover cables and network devices, including switches, hubs and routers (which frequently perform the duty of all three), are readily available at many electronics or big box stores.
