Asbestos Disposal Law

According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, the removal of asbestos from buildings is covered by both federal and local laws and regulations. At a federal level, asbestos removal is controlled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Asbestos

    • Asbestos is a mineral fiber used in a variety of products to add strength, provide heat insulation or fire resistance. Asbestos use was phased out of U.S. products during the 1970s due to the linking of the material to health problems.

    Law

    • The Washington State Department of Ecology website reports asbestos removal and disposal is governed by two federal laws, the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Substances Control Act. The Clean Air Act aims to minimize the effects of asbestos fibers released into the atmosphere during the processing, handling or removal of asbestos.

    Wetting

    • The CAA of 1970 introduced regulations for adequately wetting materials containing asbestos during their removal or disposal. The EPA website explains that the wetting of asbestos materials prevents the release of asbestos-containing particles into the atmosphere that can result in health problems for people involved in the disposal process.
