Do Canadians Need a Passport to Work in Michigan?

Canadians require a passport to work in Michigan. A passport is one of many documents accepted at the United States border for entry into the country. The passport document is required to apply to perform work in Michigan or other state if you are not a U.S. citizen.

As of June 1, 2009, the U.S. government placed new restrictions on Canadian travelers wishing to enter the country. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative outlines the acceptable documents for entry into the U.S. A Canadian passport is expected to enter by land, air and sea; however, other documents may be used. These WHTI compliant documents include an enhanced drivers license, Nexus pass or FAST pass.

Temporary Workers

Temporary workers, as defined by the U.S. Department of State, include nurses, agricultural workers, foreign nationals and performing artists including athletes and musicians. To apply for a temporary worker visa, you must visit a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Documents required for application include a DS-160 form available from the U.S. Department of State, a two-by-two photograph and a valid passport.

Other Workers

Canadian workers other than those listed above also need visas to work in Michigan. Foreign media workers require an I visa. Applying for this visa requires documents pertaining to proof of employment. Religious workers require an R visa and must be part of a religious organization with nonprofit validity in the U.S. Treaty traders and investors must establish that the trading or investment is completely lawful.
