Voice Recognition Software for Kids

Voice recognition software removes barriers between children and writing

Voice recognition software includes any computer program that converts words from speech to text. If your child has significant difficulty with writing, researcher Marshall H. Raskind at Pasadena's Frostig Center claims voice recognition software can help improve the child's reading, writing and comprehension.

  1. Benefits

    • Judith Page Van Evra, author of "Television and Child Development," writes that voice recognition software can help children express themselves in words without the need to write. Children who face physical or intellectual challenges with writing, such as dyslexia, have greater chances for success when they have access to such tools.

    Drawbacks

    • Some of the drawbacks of voice recognition software include the need for large amounts of computer memory, issues with noise interference, errors made by the software during interpretation of voices and voice strain. Also, while the software is a solution to help children overcome writing barriers, it isn't a cure to the underlying problem of ineffective writing skills.

    Considerations

    • Voice recognition software works more efficiently on desktop computers than on laptops because desktops have higher processing speeds and more memory. This creates a portability issue for children who need to transport their computers between school and home. Students who do require portability should purchase laptops with higher specifications that can accommodate voice recognition software, but these cost more than the average model.
