Aspects of Nonverbal Communication

Not all communication between people uses words. Nonverbal communication sends messages to others in ways that do not rely on spoken language, but on other body movements. These movements sometimes confirm what you say, but they can also contradict it.

  1. Body

    • The way people move their bodies, both consciously and unconsciously, communicates something about what they think and feel. Deliberate actions include handshakes and hugs, which communicate friendliness and trust, and thumbs up, meaning "Good" or "OK." Unconscious actions include twitching or fidgeting when feeling nervous or fearful or leaning in towards a person when you feel comfortable around her.

    Facial Expressions

    • The most widely recognized facial expressions include smiling to express pleasure and frowning to express displeasure. Facial expressions also involve the eyes, often on a less conscious level. Closing the eyes slightly can communicate suspicion, for example, and the presence of wrinkles around the eyes can differentiate a genuine smile of satisfaction from a "fake" smile.

    Uses

    • Reading other people's body language helps you know how to respond. You often pick up on nonverbal signals without realizing it and change your own body language accordingly. If you know something about basic nonverbal communication, you can consciously alter your behavior to make a particular impression. In a business environment, for example, standing to greet a superior or keeping your hands out of your pockets communicates a respectful, professional attitude.
