Many chefs prefer sea salt to table salt in cooking.

Many chefs prefer sea salt to table salt, which has added iodine and anti-caking agents that make table salt pour so smoothly. Sea salt has a coarser texture and a more delicate flavor than table salt. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Where Does Sea Salt Come From?

    • Sea salt is harvested from ocean water poured into wide troughs. When the water evaporates, the salt is what is left behind. Sea salt is usually hand-harvested using traditional wooden tools.

    Sea Salt and Nutrition

    • Sea salt, like all salt, is made of sodium chloride. Because of the minimal processing involved in harvesting sea salt, many trace minerals are left behind in the salt. The minerals vary depending on the source of the sea salt, but can include iodine, magnesium and potassium, and help give sea salts their distinctive flavors.

    Gourmet Sea Salts

    • Finishing salts are gourmet salts used as garnishes for salads, grilled meats, cooked vegetables and popcorn. Flake salt is a crystalline salt with a light, delicate texture. French sel gris ("gray salt") has a pure taste reflecting its many minerals, and a moister texture than many other salts. Fleur de sel ("flower of salt") comes only from the Guérande region of France, can only be harvested once a year, and is prized for its unique flavor.
