Boric acid is effective in controlling ants. Many home remedies suggest ant bait with boric acid as the principle ingredient. Boric acid is present in many over the counter ant products.
Simple Boric Acid Ant Remedy

Combine three cups of water, one cup of granulated sugar and four teaspoons of boric acid. A second recipe calls for two tablespoons of boric acid in one cup of corn syrup. Pour mixture in bottle caps or jar lids and place near ant infestations.
