How do I Remove Old Chalk From Blackboards? thumbnail
Educating students can be a difficult task with a dirty blackboard.

Blackboards are a time-tested communications medium still used in many settings. Despite their low-tech nature, there are proper ways to clean and remove old chalk from blackboards so as to prolong their life and not damage them.

  1. Preparation

    • Before digging into the task, wipe as much dry chalk as possible off the board. Also clean erasers of chalk dust so that it won't spread on the clean blackboard. Have a bucket of warm water and a soft cloth to do the essential cleaning.

    Types of Cleaning Supplies

    • Add a half cup of white vinegar, a powerful cleaner, to the bucket of water. This solution prevents streaks and adds a clean smell. Or you could substitute lemon oil for vinegar. It is an anti-bacterial, a plus for classrooms, and provides a rich citrus aroma. Commercial blackboard cleaners are also available.

    Technique

    • Wet the cloth in whichever liquid you chose, but make sure it is not dripping. Start with a top corner and wipe all the way across. Move down and wipe across again, making sure to use a clean portion of the cloth. Continue with this "stripe" method until the board is clean. Cleaning in circles can spread chalk around. Wipe the board with a dry cloth and wait for the board to dry completely before using it again.
