What Did Women Wear in the 60s?

Mini skirts were a trend in the 1960s.

The 1960s was a decade full of different clothing trends. Women wore things from hot pants to space-age styles in bold and contrasting colors. The earlier part of the decade featured different trends than the later part of the decade.

Early 1960s

During the early part of the 60s, women were still wearing trends from the 50s such as bouffant dresses and beehive hair. Women also wore a trend called the beatnik which included tight, black pants, berets and dark glasses. In 1963, women began wearing mini skirts and colorful tights.

Mid 1960s

During the mid 1960s, women began wearing space-age clothing. A wide range of materials such as metal discs, plastics, wire and leather were used to construct these garments. Popular colors included metallics and neon hues. The mini skirt from earlier in the decade became shorter and contrasting colors were used in prints.

Late 1960s

In the late part of the decade, psychedelic clothing was a popular trend. Ethnic styles, such as African or oriental looks, were also popular. Skirts went from short to long, as floor-length maxi dresses became popular. The hippie look grew in popularity between 1968 and 1969.
