About half of all Americans make at least one New Year's resolution.

Each new year, just under half of all Americans make at least one resolution for the upcoming year, and after six months, about half of those are broken, according to proactivechange.com. How can you be one of the people who maintain their resolution through the whole year? Make only a few, make ones you can actually do and tell your friends and family so they hold you accountable. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Be Healthier

    • Losing weight and exercising more are common goals, but how about shooting for something that's easier to stick with that encompasses both these ideas by making a resolution to simply be healthier? To increase your health level, eat more fruits and veggies, cut back on fried foods and desserts, and add walking to your daily routine. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park at the back of the store parking lot, join a mom's walking club.

    Learn Something New

    • Education can come in many forms and makes a great resolution. You can set the goal to learn something new every day, week, or every month. It can be as simple as looking up a word in the dictionary every day, browsing a newspaper online, going to a new part of town, talking to a neighbor you've never spoken with, taking a night class or other simple things that can increase your smarts about anything. Go bigger and aim to get a graduate degree.

    Be Greener

    • Going green can help save the planet and money. You can go green by buying all-natural or organic foods, turning off lights, taking shorter showers, changing to more energy-efficient light bulbs or walking to the store instead of driving. Or go bigger--get an energy-efficient gas furnace, put in new windows and doors in your house, get solar panels installed. However you do it, every bit will help save resources and eventually money too.
