State of Illinois Museum Operating Grants

The state of Illinois offers the Museum Capital Grants program to assist public museums with the cost of expanding and upgrading their facilities, as well as creating new exhibits to entertain and educate the public.

  1. Qualifications

    • Only museums operated by the government, or that sit on government-owned land are eligible for this grant. Seven copies of the application must be mailed to the following address to be considered:

      Applications by fax are not acceptable.

    Available Amount

    • The total available grant amount is $15 million. The program strives to allocate the full amount annually in $1 million increments.

    Rules And Regulations

    • Any approved project must complete at least a phase of the project within a two-year contract period. Consideration for approval is given to the size of the project relative to the size and attendance of the museum. The grant is distributed on a reimbursement basis and the museum is required to pay 50 percent of the costs before requesting reimbursement.
