How Does a Two-Way Plastic Mirror Work?

A two-way mirror is known by many people as a one way mirror due to the fact a reflection is only seen on one side. Another name associated with a two-way mirror is a half-silvered, surfaced mirror.

  1. Surface Coating

    • The surface is covered with a thin coat of reflective metal. Small gaps are placed within the coating to allow light to pass through the surface. The coated surface is placed in the lighted room. The light is reflected from the coated surface to create an image. The back is situated in a dark room allowing it to become a type of window.

    Differences

    • The difference between a one-way mirror and a two-way mirror is the way the light is reflected from the surface. A one-way mirror reflects light directly back at the viewer. A two-way mirror reflects light back to the viewer but also lets light through the reflective surface and acts like a window.

    Identification

    • Mirrors are used and seen in many locations. The best way to identify a two-way mirror is to hold a laser light on the surface of the mirror. The laser light will penetrate the mirrored surface and show a faint line behind the surface.
