Most organizations have an organizational structure, which is a system used to develop a hierarchy and guidelines to help meet its business and financial goals. IT (information technology) is often based on the functional concept of organizational structure.
Functional organizational structure is based on each job and its responsibilities within an organization. In many cases, if an organization has a different organizational structure such as geographical, divisional or matrix, information technology is sub-categorized into a functional structure.
Most information technology groups and organizations have several functional areas: technical support, development, networking and security to name a few. Each of these types of jobs focuses specifically in each of these areas and requires different skill sets to successfully complete the responsibilities of the job.
Because technology continues to advance and most IT professionals continuously improve skills to meet the demands of these advances, this type of structure allows IT professionals the ability to advance their skills and improve organizational technology.
