    • German homemaker Melitta Bentz first created paper coffee filters in Dresden, Germany, according to the Melitta website. Bentz fashioned a filter from blotting paper and a pot with holes hammered into it.

    Wood

    • The Coffee website reports that coffee filters are created from soft woods, such as pine, that naturally create a mesh structure to the paper to aid filtration. Coffee filters come in a variety of colors, including brown and white.

    Shape

    • Coffee filters are shaped with creped sides or in cones. The Coffee website explains the creped sides allow a smooth flow of coffee from the funnel to the pot, while cone shaped filters are angled downward to aid the flow of liquid.
