An RFID driver's license can be read without ever leaving your wallet.

An RFID driver's license is a driver's license card containing a microchip that stores identification data, which can be read via radio waves. This chip is called a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

Driver's licenses use only passive RFID technology, which uses ultra-high frequency radio waves that are reflected back to the reader. The reader interprets the pattern of reflection to obtain the RFID chip's data.

An RFID driver's license stores no personal information, and it cannot be "tracked" by authorities because it is passive technology that requires a reader to be within 20 feet. Special RFID-blocking wallets are being marketed to the privacy-conscious to prevent unauthorized users from reading the chip.
