How to Compare Broadband Internet Wireless Services

How to Compare Broadband Internet Wireless Services thumbnail
Built-in wireless Internet capability is standard on many new computers.

As the FCC permits more frequencies to be used for data transmission and with technology advances, many broadband Internet wireless services are now available. Beyond the basics of price and speed, ask these questions when selecting a wireless Internet provider.

  1. Licensed or Unlicensed?

    • Some wireless Internet services use unlicensed or public radio frequencies; these frequencies can be used by anyone. Other services use frequencies that are licensed for exclusive use within a specific area. Generally, licensed services are more reliable and more secure, particularly in urban areas.

    Fixed or Mobile?

    • Some wireless Internet services require the installation of an antenna and radio and provide a broadband connection to a fixed location. Other services support portable or mobile connectivity within a defined area. Many cell phone providers offer mobile wireless Internet solutions.

    Rooftop or USB Antenna?

    • The cost of the equipment needed to access wireless Internet networks can vary from hundreds of dollars for fixed wireless radios and antennas to under $100 for mobile USB antennas. Fixed wireless antennas are usually mounted on the exterior of the building where service will be provided. Mobile services can be accessed by portable modems or USB devices.

    Here or Everywhere?

    • Different wireless Internet networks provide different types of coverage. Fixed wireless and WiFi services have limited, isolated network access points; mobile services provide more ubiquitous access.
