How to Compare Automatic Pool Cleaners
There are three basic types of automatic pool cleaners: suction, pressure and robotic cleaners. Automatic pool cleaners make pool ownership easier, but you should learn the features and strengths of each type of cleaner before buying, since they are expensive. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Suction Cleaners
-
Suction cleaners are the least expensive and simplest form of automatic pool cleaner. They suck water and debris up from the bottom and sides of a pool, filter it through the pool's filtration system and return the water. This provides great water circulation, but quickly clogs the filtration system with large debris, leaves and sticks.
Pressure Cleaners
-
Pressure cleaners operate either from your circulation pump or a booster pump. They move with water pressure from the water return and have a dedicated debris bag so they won't clog the filtration system. They are best for leaves and sticks. Look for a cleaner with a floating leaf skimmer.
-
Robotic Automatic Pool Cleaners
-
Robotic cleaners have their own motors inside the unit. They run on electric power from a transformer plugged into a GFCI circuit. They provide great coverage, and many have a computer chip that allows the cleaner to learn the layout of the pool. They are most effective on small silt and debris.
