Mardi Gras Clothing Ideas
Mardi Gras costumes embrace two themes: fun and mystery. Mardi Gras has three official colors that can be incorporated into costumes, each symbolizing a different theme. Gold represents power, purple symbolizes justice and green indicates faith. Does this Spark an idea?

Traditioinal Costume

Royal costumes can emphasize mystery while adhering to traditional costume ideas. A glittered king costume accomplishes both of these goals. The costume requires a large crown that incorporates Mardi Gras colors. A purple robe coincides with the theme of royalty, and a green satin tunic completes the clothing portion of the costume. A mask decorated with glitter makes the costume unique and adds mystery; purple, gold and green glitter can be used to decorate a simple white face mask. Copious body glitter on any bare skin completes the glittered king look.
Fun Costume

A rock and roll fairy costume will address the "fun" element of Mardi Gras. The costume starts with a standard fairy costume, complete with wings and a wand. Torn black fishnet stockings and temporary tattoos help add an authentic rock and roll look, along with colorful temporary hair dye, in outrageous colors such as hot pink or lime green. The wand is attached to the neck of an old guitar, and heavy black eyeliner completes the look.

Couple's Costume

Dressing-up with a significant other makes for an interesting two-part costume. Fat tourist costumes acknowledge and poke fun at the many visitors to New Orleans during Mardi Gras season. They start with either a costume body suit, or simply extra padding from multiple layers of clothing. Gaudy Hawaiian matching shirts, shorts, white socks with sandals and large straw hats complete the looks. A white base on the nose represents sunscreen, and both costumes include Hawaiian leis. One person wears a camera around the neck, while the other wears a pair of binoculars. Finally, a tourist outfit would not be complete without matching fanny packs.
