About PhD Online Learning
The doctorate is the highest degree one can earn. Some choose to earn their Ph.D in person, but others opt to pursue this degree online. There are many online Ph.D programs to choose from and several factors to consider.
-
Features
-
In-person or telephone interaction may be part of an online program. When a student enrolls in an online PhD program, he can expect to spend the majority of his time on a computer watching prerecorded lectures, streaming video, writing, researching, or posting communications to instructors and fellow students. PhD students should also expect to participate in phone conferences or attend study groups, seminars or even weekend-long intensives.
Time Frame
-
Some programs are more flexible with time than others. The amount of time required to complete an online PhD program varies. For a student who already has a Master's degree, the process may take as little as two years. Other programs admit students with a bachelor's degree and by combining master's and doctoral level coursework. Students can expect to be enrolled for four to five years. Some programs require students to complete all coursework within a specified time frame while others allow students greater flexibility.

Considerations
-
Research is often a requirement of graduate study. In some areas of study, PhD students may need to undertake practicums as well as dissertation research. The time required for this aspect of graduate study depends on the discipline or field of study.
