Table manners for Russian dining

Russians are very particular with their traditions when it comes to dining. They have integrated some Western customs in the way they live but they still give importance to old traditions and etiquette during meals.

  1. Invitation

    • Russians consider it impolite when guests decline their offer to have drinks or share a meal with them. Go to the location of the dinner or lunch on time and bring a small token of appreciation for the host. Your gift can be as simple as a bottle of wine.

    Eating

    • Do not start eating unless the host urges you to do so. Allow older guests or guests of honor to get food first before getting your own. Russians use their bread and dip it in their dish's sauce before taking a bite. This is considered a polite thing to do. Leave a bit of food on your plate to show that the host has provided enough for you to eat.

    Toasts

    • Men typically pour drinks for the women who are sitting right beside them. It is common for alcoholic beverages to be served during meals. Russians also give toasts, especially during special occasions. After the toast, gently touch the glass to those sitting nearby and finish the shot.
